Elaine B. Magrath
Easton, Elaine Beolchi Magrath, of Easton, formerly of St. Michaels, died at the Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, February 15, 2012. She was 88.
Born on December 8, 1923 in the Bronx New York, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Jeanette Kerr Beolchi. She attended the Ursaline School for Girls in New Rochelle, N.Y., and graduated from Mamaroneck High School, in Mamaroneck, N.Y. During WWII, she was a volunteer with the British war relief and the American Red Cross. She was a member of the American Red Cross Motor Service, and a volunteer at the Greenwich Hospital, Greenwich, CT.
She joined the Dorr Company in N.Y. City as an assistant to the Chief Mechanical Engineer. In 1948 she married William Bigelow Magrath and raised two children, Jean Magrath Galloway and her husband Peter of Wilton, Ct and William Beolchi Magrath and his wife Susan Shen of Washington, D.C.
Elaine inherited her love of sailing from her father and grandfather Vincent Beolchi, who owned and raced the fifty-foot cruising yacht” Fortuna III” well know on Long Island Sound and the Hudson. He also was a lover of boat racing, and once had his boat in the Marblehead race to New York- in which he was fortunate enough to finish second.
She enjoyed sailing and racing one design sailboats on Long Island Sound. She was past Rear Commodore of the Greenwich Cove Racing Association, Greenwich, Ct. and past President of the National Rhodes 18’ Class Association. Mrs. Magrath was a member of the daughters of the Union “General Grant Chapter”. She enjoyed target shooting with the “ Cos Cob Revolver and Rifle Club” in Greenwich, Ct. She had been an active member of “the 10th Mountain Division” Association, making lap robes for the wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The National Association of the 10th Mountain Division presented her with the Meritorious Service Award in 2005 for significant contributions to the National Association through exceptional service for the benefit of the Association, in addition, she was a member of the Miles River Yacht Club in St. Michaels, MD., and a past member of the Riverside Yacht Club in Riverside, Ct.
Prior to moving to Bozman, MD. in 1984, she was employed as a “Field Drafter” with Northeast Utilities, in Stamford, CT.
The last few years she and her husband enjoyed traveling to England, Scotland, Italy, France, Switzerland, Alaska, China, Thailand, Hawaii, Canada and the Virgin Islands.
She was a life long Episcopalian, and a member of Christ Church in St. Michaels, MD.
In addition to her beloved husband and children, Mrs. Magrath is survived by four granddaughters; Jennifer Galloway Mateychuk and husband Aron of Framingham, Mass., Stephanie Galloway Toreson and husband Ryan of Chicago, Il., Allison Galloway of Bridgeport, Ct, and Samantha Magrath of Washington, D.C two sister; Lorraine Spence and Donna Richards and husband Lewis all of Oxford, MD. and one Great grandson; Connor Joseph Toreson. One sister; Jeanette Baker is deceased.
Services will be held at the Hurley & Ostrowski Funeral Home P.A., St. Michaels, MD. on Monday February 20, 2012 at 5:00PM.
Burial will be in N.Y. at a later date.
