This afternoon will be a tough good-bye for my friend, fellow Coach at Colonel Richardson High School, and co-worker (where I first began my teaching career at Colonel Middle). My father’s name was Harry. When I was hired and then met him at Colonel really felt it was a sign that I was supposed to be there. I assisted coached soccer with Harry on Varsity and it eventually lead me to head coach the JV team. Had about 4 years with Harry doing that after days at work. He taught English in a different grade but we bonded fast. Coached both of his sons, taught Eric US History in 8th grade. Didn’t get the chance to teach Tayor (his daughter) but she benefited from the work done to get a girls soccer team I was involved with at Colonel High. In the off season our common passion for hockey led to floor hockey games after school with some staff and students on Friday afternoons. There were some memorable road trips to Caps games (not really to watch them, but our favorite teams (Flyers for him, Rangers for me). Him and the other guys played pranks on me and it made my transition to Maryland a true right of passage.
I will miss Harry a great deal and was so glad I caught up with him on this day in 2018 (see photo). I was really looking forward to playing golf with him and these fellow co-workers in the Fall. I hope to be a fill-in still but know it will not be the same without him there. Rest in peace Harry. Hope you get to meet up with my Dad and share some great Colonel stories we had together.
