John F. Mautz,III D.D.S.'s Obituary
John Frederick Mautz III, 74, dentist and long-time resident of St. Michaels, Maryland, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, September 6, 2014.
Dr. Mautz was born January 23, 1940, in Cleveland, Ohio, the second of four children born to Frederick R. and Bertha (Specht) Mautz. He graduated from Cleveland Lutheran High School in1958, received a B.A. from Capital University in 1962 and a D.D.S. from the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio in 1968. He then served for four years as a Captain in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Devens, MA, before establishing his dental practice in Easton, Maryland.
Dr. Mautz married Diana Quatman of Lima, Ohio, in 1967, and together they had two sons. He enjoyed his extended family and many close friends throughout the Eastern Shore and in particular, at his family restaurant in St. Michaels, Carpenter Street Saloon. He provided quality dental care and was well respected by his patients.
Dr. Mautz was an avid outdoor hunting and fishing enthusiast and embraced the waterfowl and hunting opportunities in St. Michaels. He also enjoyed small scale farming and was especially proud of his field of sunflowers and of growing a wide variety of tomatoes. John was the family historian and became the archivist of a large collection of photographs taken by his father, Frederick. He demonstrated his artistic talents by restoring many of these photographs and sharing them with family, many of which they had not seen previously. This photographic collection serves as a record of family history from Grandfather Mautz’s farm in Marion, Ohio, and their early childhood. In addition to his wife of 47 years Diana, Dr. Mautz is survived by his sons; John Frederick “Johnny†Mautz,IV. (Rebecca), Daniel Francis Mautz, two grandchildren; John F. Mautz V, and Evelyn Grace Mautz, all of St. Michaels, three sisters; and their husbands, Elsa Stafford (John), Grass Lake, Michigan; Margaret Chadwell (William), Indialantic, Florida; and Katherine Kocan (Edmour Blouin), Stillwater, Oklahoma. Nephews include Alan Adamson (Raphiella) , Robert Adamson, Jay (Elizabeth) Kocan, Jon (Kim) Kocan, John David (Spring) Stafford, Marty Chadwell (Bonnie) and Keith Chadwell (Elizabeth), and Nieces Mary Ann Stafford, Jane Mast (Alan) and Tina Chadwell Heath (Mark); and Diana's brothers and sister and their children, Melinda (Tom) Mooney, Tom (Anne) Mooney, Eddie (Allison) Mooney, Michelle (Rob) Ritchy, Kelly (Todd) Myer, Greg Quatman, and Thomas "T.Q." Quatman.
Funeral arrangements are by Ostrowski Funeral home, St. Michaels, MD. A viewing will be held at the Mautz home at 23942 porter’s Creek Lane, St. Michaels, on Thursday, September 11, from 3 to 7 pm. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 12 at 11:00 am at Christ Episcopal Church, 21663 North Talbot Street, St. Michaels, followed by a burial at the Oxford Cemetery in Oxford.
A celebration of life will be held at Carpenter Street Saloon in St. Michaels following the service and burial, the celebration will conclude with a toast to Dr. John.
