John E. Gadsby
John Eric Gadsby of St. Michaels died in his home on Tuesday, November 12, 2013. He was 67. Born in Baltimore, Maryland on June 6, 1946, he was the beloved son of the late Eric M. and Alice D’Arment Gadsby, and the cherished stepson of the late Loretta Kerchner Gadsby. After attending public schools in Baltimore County and Baltimore City, and the Carson Long Academy in New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania, John attended Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, graduating with a B. A. degree in Psychology in 1968. Following graduation, John served as an officer in the U. S. Navy with tours in Panama and the Caribbean, achieving the rank of Lieutenant. He later received an M. A. degree in Psychology from Loyola University of Maryland. In 1971, John married Carol Louise Payne of Catonsville. They made their home in Baltimore, until moving to St. Michaels 14 years ago. John worked for the State of Maryland Department of Juvenile Services for more than forty years. Most recently, he served as the Department of Juvenile Services Regional Director for the Eastern Shore. John was a member of the Miles River Yacht Club of St. Michaels, and enjoyed sailing with the local clubs. He was an active member of the Martingham Community Association. In addition to his wife, John is survived by his children, David A. Gadsby and his wife Joanna, Eric T. Gadsby and wife Sarah Kiley, all of Baltimore, and Megan G. Griffin and husband John of Asheville, North Carolina. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Rhys and Drew Gadsby. A celebration of John’s life will be held at the Miles River Yacht Club in St. Michaels on Saturday, November 16, 2013 from 10:30 A. M. to 1:00 P. M. There will be time for friends to gather with the family at 10:30, prior to the Celebration of Life at 11:15. Casual and “boating” attire are suggested. In light of John’s dedication to the Chesapeake Bay and education, the family requests donations in his memory to the Schooner Sultana Project, P.O. Box 524, 105 S.
