Jose Eduardo Cuevas' Obituary
Jose Eduardo Cuevas
October 13, 1935 - January 15, 2021
Jose Cuevas, Joseph Cuevas, Uncle Eddie.....
It is with deepest sympathies and sadness to announce the passing of Jose Eduardo Cuevas of Preston, MD, on January 15, 2021 in his home. He was 85 years old.
He is survived by brother, Juan Cuevas; sons Luis, Andre and Neal Cuevas; grandchildren Tia, Archie, and Charme Cuevas; grandchildren Alex, Justin, and Leo Cuevas Riego de Dios; former wife Helga Cuevas; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
Jose was predeceased by parents Juan Pablo Cuevas of Adjunta, PR, and Maria Polonia Matheus of Mendoza, Venezuela; and siblings Aida Battista, Alberto Pacheco, Laura Martinez, and Maria Cuevas.
Born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York City, Jose dedicated himself to a life of learning from an early age. He earned scholarships to Cardinal Hayes Parochial School, Manhattan College for undergraduate, and Marquette University for a Masters in Nuclear Physics. Throughout his life he learned and mastered martial arts of Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, and Tai Chi; learned/practiced Reiki. He passionately taught students in each of these Eastern disciplines to enrich their lives. A spiritual soul and warrior, Jose always sought peace and healing for family and friends.
Jose jumped headlong into life as the scientist - he collected and analyzed data on everything; and was driven and focused on the pursuit of a purity in faith or martial art. Although a very independent and private man, Jose's loud laugh was infectious, and his readiness to join in a meal or beverage made him good company. Our oft stubborn, argumentative, and willful Jose called with concern when we were on his mind or he felt something was wrong. His humility, humor, service and kindness to the community was a gift. As the song goes, Jose "did it his way!" . . . and for that, we will miss him dearly.
