Meriln M. (Merl) Evans' Obituary
Ret. Chief Merlin M. Evans
Merlin M. Evans Jr. of Preston, and former Chief of Police of Ridgely, passed quietly on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at the Memorial Hospital, Easton, surrounded by his wife Sharon, his children and best friend Randy Ross, losing his long battle with cancer. He was 65.
Born in Washington D.C. on September 14, 1946, he was the son of the late Kathie and Merlin M. Evans Sr. Following his graduation from public school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1966 Mr. Evans served as a Corpsman with Company “D” 3Rd Battalion 4th U.S. Division. Following his release from active duty in 1972 the worked at various jobs until 1987 when he took a position with the St. Michaels Police Dept. where he became Lieutenant and Administrator. In 1999 Merl left St. Michaels to join the Ridgely Police Dept. In 2004 he became Chief of Police for the Ridgley Police Dept. during which time he also served as interim police chief for the Preston Police Dept. as well. While with Ridgely he earned and received numerous public service awards’s his most prized accomplishment was receiving the Governors Citation in 2004. He was a member of M.D.C.P.S. working hard on the click it or ticket it programs, child safe seat programs & also taught classes at the Wor-Wic College for the Police academy.
Since his retirement Merl has enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren, his friends, working in his yard, riding his horse B.B., playing with his dogs, and going fishing with his best friend, and “Bud” brother, Randy Ross.
In addition to his wife and soul mate Sharon, Merle is survived by his sister-in-law Peggy & Ray, his Brother Randy & Pam, the children of his heart; Heather, Josh & Jennifer Candy & Brian, Garret & Jennifer, Sam & Christie, Frankie & Alyssa, Susie & Chad,& Kim, 15 grandchildren; Kyle, Kelly, Katie, Victoria, Amanda, Timmy, James, Abby, Jessica, Brianna, Rheanna, Angel, Joshua, Mason, Madison, Rylie, and Jackson, and two great-grandchildren; Kameron, & Maria. Also survived by very close family friends Tracy Brinkerhoff, J.W. & Kathy Dulin, Scott Smith & Nancy Stewart, Ed Lusby & Kathleen Bissonnette, Billy Sard Jr., & Mike Davis, also survived by Dawn & Tim, Dean & Susan
A memorial service will be held at St. Lukes United Methodist Church, St. Michaels, MD., on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at 1:00PM. The Rev. Barry Ball of the Maryland Natural Resources Police will officiate.
Burial will be private.
