She was born February 16, 1936 in Wayne, NJ to Margaret and Leonard VanSchaik and moved to the Preston area as a young girl where she met her life-long love in second grade. She was a devoted and loving mother and homemaker.
She had an interest in art for most of her life; however, her formal training began about 45 years ago in Adult Education classes. She has since studied with many local artists at the Academy of Art Museum in Easton, MD, and has taken workshops with nationally known artists. These artists include Tony Couch, Charles Reid, Jim Wilcox, Ken Backaus and others.
She enjoyed capturing local scenes, flowers and still life in watercolors, oils and pastels, and until recently maintained an active studio near Preston where she taught art classes. Her work can be seen at many exhibits on the Eastern Shore at which she has won numerous awards, and in private collections.
Mildred was a member of the Academy of Art Museum, the Working Artists Forum, the Dorchester Art Center and the Caroline County Council of Arts and is represented by the Foundry Gallery in Denton.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Lawrence Fluharty Jr.; daughter, Karen Wolff of Virginia Beach; son, Steve Fluharty and wife Dawn of Federalsburg; sister, Alice Cook of Centreville; sister in law, Shirley Van Schaik of Wilmington, DE; grandchildren, Ashley Fluharty and Sean Fluharty and great grandson, Wyatt Fluharty.
