Mildred Caroline Turner Layton's Obituary
Mildred Caroline Turner Layton of Federalsburg, MD passed away on Thursday, March 17, 2011 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton. She was 81.
Born January 9, 1930 near Concord, she was the daughter of the late Kelly and May Bradley Turner. She married James Louis Layton on Jan. 23, 1948. He died in 1994.
She was a graduate of Caroline High School. A lifelong farmer, she started working in the fields for her father as soon as she was big enough to pick tomatoes and strawberries. Never working away from home, she always enjoyed working on the family farms. She started driving tractors in the field when her father bought his first tractor in 1939, continuing as long as her health permitted.
She, along with her husband Jim Layton, started the Eastern Shore Threshermen & Collectors Association, Inc. She served as a director and past vice-president. She received a Governor’s Citation in 2010 for 50 years of dedicated service to the organization. She spent many long hours feeding the many volunteers working at the show grounds and handling all of the ordering of supplies for the shows.
She enjoyed attending the many antique steam and tractor shows in the Mid-Atlantic area and visiting with the many friends she met at the various shows. She was also a lifetime member of the Mason Dixon Historical Society at Westminster, MD.
Mrs. Layton is survived by three daughters, Shirley Jackson of American Corner, Brenda Stant and Patricia Todd, both of Harmony; three grandchildren, George Layton Jackson of Ellicott City, Susan Jane Stant and Alyssa Caroline Todd of Harmony; two great-granddaughters, Emily and Lauren Jackson. She is also survived by a sister, Florence Meredith of Denton. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother Roland Turner who died in 1980.
Funeral services will be held on Wed. March 23, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Framptom Funeral Home with Rev. Howard “Buddy” Dunn and Rev. Ellery Adams officiating. Interment will follow in Concord Cemetery near Federalsburg.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and on
