Russell Smith, Jr.
Easton, Russell Smith, Jr. of Easton, MD died at home on November 27, 2013 following a brief illness. Born September 27, 1927 in Cambridge, MD, he was the son of the late Russell Smith, Sr. and Carrie Doenges Smith. He grew up in Easton, joined the US Marine Corps in early 1945 and attended boot camp in Paris Island, SC. He was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division and served in the South Pacific. When he returned home in 1948 he completed his education by graduating from Easton High School. He married the former Jeanne Spencer of St. Michaels, MD on October 2, 1948. Russell first worked as Branch Manager of Taylor Auto Supply store in Easton. He then joined the Talbot County Sheriff's Office and was eventually promoted to the rank of Chief Deputy. He became the only Deputy Sheriff in the state of Maryland to serve under six different Sheriffs. He completed his working years as Branch Manager of Wharton Barnard Auto Supply in Cambridge, retiring in 1989. Russell enjoyed traveling the United States and Canada with his wife, Jeanne in their travel trailer. Favorite destinations were the national parks, Florida, Montana and Canada. When at home he enjoyed flying with his best friend Carey Dorset and was proud to earn a Pinch Hitter Certificate which authorized him to land the plane in an emergency! Russell, known as “Smitty” throughout the Easton area, entertained people with his many stories, often drawn from his years in law enforcement and the Marines. His large extended family was extremely important to him and he showed kindness and support in numerous ways. He was also active in local military organizations such as E.E. Streets VFW Post #5118 of Easton and the Marine Corps League, Choptank Detachment. He was involved in charitable works, particularly during the holiday season, believing that everyone should have a Merry Christmas! Russell will be greatly missed by family, friends and the community. Russell is survived by his wife, Jeanne; sister Viola Davis of St. Petersburg, FL; children Susan Smith (John Baumann) of Scandia, MN; Russell Smith, III (Linda Dwyer) of Easton, MD and Sylvia Smith Carroll (David) of Cordova, MD; grandchildren Justin Smith, Isaac Smith, Jamie Smith, Spencer Carroll and Patrick Carroll; great grandchildren; nieces Laura Lee Harrison Mulvaney, Chris Harrison Dorset (and her husband, Carey Dorset), Lynn Crabtree and Carol O'Neil and nephews Russell Davis, David Crabtree and Stephen Smith. The funeral services will be held at St. Marks Methodist Church, Oxford Road, Easton on Tuesday, December 3. Viewing will be 12 noon; the funeral at 1:00 PM. A graveside service with military honors will take place at 2:30 P.M. on Friday December 6th in the Olivet Cemetery, St. Michaels MD. .
