Thomas Belshaw Howell's Obituary
Thomas B. Howell St. Michaels, Thomas B. Howell, 83 of St. Michaels, MD. passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, August 1, 2014. Tom was born in East Haven, Ct; on October 22, 1930 to Esther and Thomas Howell. He attended East Haven High School. Tom was married and is survived by his adoring wife, Patricia “Pat†Howell. He has a daughter; Patricia Robertson (Charles), and a step-daughter Susan Powers. Tom has 3 grandchildren; Leigh Robertson, and James and Nicole Bealer. Tom is survived by a brother; Peter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Esther, and brothers Raymond and Robert Howell. Tom was a veteran serving four years in the Air Force. He worked at Sunoco for 30 years in various positions, ending his career there as a corporate meeting planner. He helped form the Philadelphia Chapter of Meeting Planners International. Given his position he was often invited to be the first guest at hotel openings and a passenger on inaugural flights with various airlines. Upon his retirement from Sun Company he formed Thomas B. Howell & Associates headquartered in Philadelphia. He continued to plan meetings and conventions for Sun Company and others. He and Pat moved to St. Michaels and operated Longfellow’s Restaurant. After three years they left the restaurant to follow new interest. In 1991, St. Michaels Candy and Gifts was created where Pat still operates the business today. He became involved with the St. Michaels Business Association serving as Treasure for 7 years, and was on the Board of Directors of the Talbot Co. Chamber of Commerce from 1992-1995. He served as Secretary in 1995. ST. Michaels Candy and Gifts was the Talbot Co. Chamber of Commerce 1997 outstanding Business of the year. Tom was an avid stamp and coin collector, loved working the New York Times crossword puzzle, and had a love of travel. Tom and Pat had a passion for each other and together they both had a passion for the Candy Store. On their many buying excursions when Pat asked his advice on a purchase, his reply was, “As long as it’s cuteâ€! He was loved and respected by all who knew him was dubbed the†Mayor of Main Streetâ€, and could be seen always sporting a button down shirt and khakis. A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at the St. Michaels Candy and Gift Store, the date is to be announced. Arrangements are by the Ostrowski Funeral Home, St. Michaels.
