Thomas Mark Quimby's Obituary
Thomas Mark Quimby passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at the University of Maryland Medical Center at the age of 74.
Tom was born on June 14, 1949, in Fort Meade, MD. A 1967 graduate of St. Michaels High School, he attended Virginia Commonwealth University receiving a BFA in acting and earned the MFA in acting from Florida State University.
Tom spent many years in New York City working as an actor and an employee of Asprey and Tiffany & Company. While living in New York, he met his late life-companion, David Smith. In 1989, Tom and David moved back to St. Michaels to be near his parents, Lt. Col. William & Ruby Quimby. After their deaths, Tom remained in St. Michaels where he owned and operated Justine's Ice Cream Parlour. Tom was the creative force behind the "Famous Wall of Shakes". Justine's has been featured in numerous national publications as one of the finest ice cream parlours in the United States.
Tom is well known throughout the mid-shore and beyond for his talent in acting and directing. He acted in and directed shows for the Tred Avon Players, the Annapolis Dinner Theatre, the Avalon Theatre, Anne Arundel Community College, and more than 20 productions for the Easton High School music department. Tom was named "Arts Educator of the Year" by the Talbot County Art Council for his endless contributions to the arts community and his tireless commitment to the Easton High School music department. During those years, Tom's creative genius touched the lives of countless youths.
In the early 90's, Tom was the Artistic Director of the Mid-Shore Center for the Performing Arts at the Avalon Theatre. He served as adjunct professor at Anne Arundel Community College from 1991 to 2003 where he taught acting and theatre history. In addition to his passion for the theatre, Tom loved reading, antiquing, film memorabilia, music, painting, cooking, fine dining and trips to NYC.
He met his partner, Kostadin Petrov, in 2008 and they married on April 4, 2014.
Tom is survived by his spouse, Kostadin Petrov; his sister, Katherine Cooper, a sister-in-law, Carla Quimby; nieces, Amanda Cooper, Fiona Cooper, Jennifer Lysinger, Laura Quimby, and Megan Quimby. He was preceded in death by his late life companion, David M. Smith; his parents, Lt. Col. William and Ruby St. Clair Quimby and his brother; Parker Quimby.
Funeral services will be conducted at Christ Church, St. Michaels, officiated by The Reverend Steve Mosher, on Saturday, December 16, at 11:00 am. A reception will follow the service in the Christ Church Parish Hall.
