Thomas Darren Whewell's Obituary
Thomas Darren Whewell, 63, of Greensboro, Maryland, passed away on June 01, 2022, with family by his side. In grace and dignity, Tom has gone to his final home group to continue working the steps with his higher power, but will continue to be a passionate and resolute presence among his fellow members here on earth.
Tom was born on November 19, 1958 to Patricia Whewell (née McFadden) and Carman Whewell. Tom was a devoted husband to his wife, Elaine Mickley-Whewell, a wonderfully loving father to his son, Thomas Patrick-Galen Whewell and stepfather to Jessica and Joshua Martin, as well as a beloved brother to his siblings Patrick Whewell, Mark Whewell, Rick Whewell, Kathy Whewell-Freed and his predeceased brother, Brian Whewell.
Although Tom was born in Illinois, he was raised in Pasadena, Maryland, where he graduated from Northeast High School. From there he went on to the Broadcasting Institute of Maryland in Baltimore, and for 35 years, Tom’s quick-witted talent could be heard over the airwaves from various radio stations throughout Maryland. However, it was at WCEI, 96.7 FM of Easton, where he spent the majority of his career as an on-air personality. Because of his decades of playing tunes, it was not uncommon that when an oldie, but goodie came on the radio, Tom would simply say with a smirk on his face, “played it as a current”. In his later years, Tom hung up the headset and went to work for the Arc of The Central Chesapeake. With selfless devotion, he served the individuals, all of whom came to love him dearly, for 12 years. In May of 1991, Tom faithfully committed himself to a life of recovery after years of struggling with addictions, and since then, has served as an inspiration and beacon of hope for those who face similar challenges.
Many who knew Tom often heard him say, “We are not in charge, and everything will be alright”. Tom will always be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor and determination, but of all of the things Tom wanted to be remembered as, he said the most important to him was being “The luckiest Dad in the world” to his son, “Little” Tom.
Because Tom so enjoyed sailing, a private ceremony will be held in his honor in Wittman, Maryland by the water. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to a charity or organization of choice.
