W. Burnley Wyatt's Obituary
William Burnley Wyatt of Federalsburg, MD passed away on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton, MD. He was 87 years old.
Burnley, as he was known to most, was born May 23, 1922 in Denton, MD, the son of the late Thomas Herbert and Hester Lilly Raughley Wyatt.
He graduated in 1939 from Caroline High School in Denton. Upon graduation he went to work at the E.I. DuPont Nylon Plant in Seaford, DE until he entered active duty in the United States Army on Feb. 3, 1941. He served with the 29th Infantry Division in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He came ashore with the 29th Division at Omaha Beach on the afternoon of June 6, 1944 during the Normandy invasion. He was discharged with the rank of sergeant on June 18, 1945. He received the American Defense Medal and the European, African Middle Eastern Service Medal. He was very proud of his service to his country and vividly recalled the details, sharing them with family, friends, and strangers throughout the years.
His life’s work, devotion, and love for 49 years was served in the capacity of president for a well known food processing and farming operation on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, known as John N. Wright, Jr. Inc. He was a lifetime member of Union United Methodist Church in Federalsburg where he served in numerous administrative capacities throughout the years. He was a Director of People’s Bank in Denton for 27 years. He served as a member of the following organizations, Nanticoke Lodge #172 in Denton and Federalsburg, Eastern Shore Shrine Club Boumi Temple in Baltimore, Federalsburg VFW Post 5246, the 29th Division Eastern Shore Association in Cambridge, and the Mid-Atlantic Food Processors.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Ann Wright Wyatt, whom he married on Sept. 25, 1949, three daughters, Hester W. McNeil of Federalsburg, Carol W. Bone and her husband, Lee, of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Mary W. Harding and her husband Jimmy of Federalsburg, 5 grandchildren, Emily McNeil Warner and her husband, Joel, Wesley McNeil, Leslie Bone, Wyatt Bone and Katie Harding, and a great-grandchild Gabriel Warner. Three siblings preceded him in death, Mary Anna Schaub, Thomas H. Wyatt, Jr. and J. Raughley Wyatt.
He loved his family and community. He never met a stranger and was a caring and generous man, expecting nothing in return. Humorously, he was always spotted throughout the area in his big Mercury station wagon with his beloved, trademark boxer dog by his side. He always owned a boxer from the time his children were young until just recently.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 8, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at the Union United Methodist Church in Federalsburg with Rev. Danese Collins and Rev. Denzil Cheek officiating.
