Willard Alan (Al) Schilling's Obituary
Willard A. Schilling
Easton, Willard Alan “Al” Schilling, 76 of Easton, Md. and N. Waterford, Maine, died peacefully in the company of his family at Memorial Hospital of Easton on November 30, 2011 after a prolonged illness.
Al was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. April 28 1935 to Arthur C. and Dorothy A. Schilling. He attended Brooklyn Tech High School and graduated Cum Laude from Oswego State Teachers College, later receiving a Masters Degree from Trenton State College. He was an industrial arts teacher in the NYC School system for 35 years, retiring from I.S.34 in Tottenville, NY in 1995.
Al married Peggy Ann Beer in 1959 and together they had three son; Russell Alan Schilling, Douglas John Schilling and Evan Charles Shilling.
A community activist, Al was involved in Jaycees, Kiwanis, and Boy Scouting as well as serving on the board of Christ United Methodist Church in Lakewood, N.J. As an accomplished woodworker, he was always willing to lend his skills, building a hand-hewn cross of solid cherry wood for a local church. Al was a consummate do-it-yourselfer, with skills ranging from car engine overhauls to plumbing, electrical, roofing, gardening, and small appliance repair. He loved flying with his friend and neighbor Jerry Gertner, as well as deep sea fishing, but his great passion throughout his life was Model Railroading, a love for which he imparted to his son’s. Al was especially fond of Western Maine, where he spent happy times with friends and family at the Schilling family lakeside camp, “Pine Tree Knoll”. The legacy of his love of nature and the beauty of Western Maine have deeply instilled in his children and grandchildren.
Al leaves to mourn; Evan C. Schilling, his wife Eileen and their children Jake and Jenna; Russell A. Schilling, M.D. his wife Janet, and Russ’s sons, Matthew and Peter; a brother Arthur C. Schilling, Jr. his wife Jeanne of Ponte Veda Beach, Fla. and the “Lunch Bunch” friends at Londonderry, where Al resided for ten years. He was preceded in death by a son Douglas John Schilling.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 3, 2011 from 3 to 5 PM at the Hurley & Ostrowski Funeral Home P.A. 312 S. Talbot St. St. Michaels.
Burial will be held in Maine at a later date.
Donations may be made to the Memorial Hospital, Easton, where Al received many occasions of true caring.
