William Frederick Melvin, Sr.'s Obituary
William Frederick Melvin, Sr. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at Caroline Nursing and Rehab in Denton where he was briefly a resident. Mr. Melvin was 88 years old.
Born on the family farm in Federalsburg, Maryland on July 14, 1936, Bill was the only son of the late F. Norwood and Ruth Noble (Passwaters) Melvin. He graduated from Denton High School in 1954, and three years later married the former Mary Lee Pedrick. She passed away in 2016 and together they enjoyed 59 years of marriage. On the family farm they raised four sons. Their eldest child Christina Melvin passed in infancy.
Bill was known as a hard worker and farming always was a part of his life. In high school he was in the FFA and as an adult was a member of the Idlewild Ruritans. Besides the farm, Bill also worked as a brick mason and later retired from DuPont as a shift mechanic with over 30 years' service. At DuPont he made close friends with whom he traveled to NASCAR races and other events. In his free time, he was a member of the Eastern Shore Threshermen and Collector's Association, a Farmall Tractor aficionado, and in his younger years played softball. Bill (Poppy) enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He simply liked to keep busy. It was difficult for him as his health declined and started to prevent him from continuing his usual outdoor activities that he enjoyed.
Bill is survived by his four sons, William F. Melvin, Jr. (Kathleen) of Bradenton, Florida, Jonathan D. Melvin (Debbie) of Denton, Maryland, Steven Kirk Melvin, and Thomas Troy Melvin both of Federalsburg, Maryland; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Lee Pedrick and sister Doris Vickery.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on October 5th, 2024, at the Denton Wayside Church of Christ in Christian Union, located at 26993 Shore Hwy., Denton, MD. The family will receive callers one hour prior to the start of the service. Burial will follow at Bloomery Cemetery.
Donations in Bill's memory may be made to Denton Wayside CCCU.
Arrangements are entrusted to Framptom Funeral Home by the Coales, Federalsburg, Maryland.
