William Hobart Mowbray's Obituary
William (Bill) Mowbray, 88, of Preston, Maryland passed away peacefully at home on October 28, 2025. Bill was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend and his presence will be deeply missed.
Bill was born in Caroline County Maryland on December 3, 1936 to John and Pauline Mowbray. Bill served in the Army for 2 years which had a profound impact on his life. After leaving the Army he joined the State Highway Administration in Caroline County where he worked for 36 years as a heavy equipment operator and an instructor. After retiring from the state, he worked for several years at Chance's Automotive Shop. When Bill wasn't working, he stayed busy supporting his family in their activities and working on projects. Bill had a green thumb, kept his vehicles spotless, enjoyed bluegrass concerts and going out to breakfast with friends.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife Joan whom he was married to for 63 years; daughter Beth Prouse and husband Drew; daughter Jennifer Walter and husband Tom; grandchildren Danielle Knode and husband Jeremy, Adam Prouse, Hannah Prouse; great-grandchildren Clint and Colt Cannon, Piper and Jeremy Knode Jr. Bill is also survived by his brothers Tom and Wilson Mowbray and numerous nieces and nephews who were very dear to him. He is preceded in death by granddaughter Heidi Howell; brothers Paul, Leroy, James, and George Mowbray; sisters Ruth Geisel, Ann Rayfield, Evelyn Slacum, Betty Lynch, Dortha Childs, and Helen Sannes.
Funeral services will be held at Framptom Funeral Home in Federalsburg, Maryland on Wednesday, November 5, 2025. Visitation will be held at noon followed by a funeral service at 1pm. Interment will be at 2pm at Maryland Eastern Shore Veteran Cemetery at 6827 E New Market Ellwood Rd, Hurlock, MD. A reception will be held at the Lions Club in Preston, Maryland afterwards.
